A telephone survey conducted by Employee Benefit Research Institute and Greenwald and Associates found 28 percent of respondents have less than $1,000 in savings, not counting their primary residence or defined benefit plans.

According to USA Today, 57 percent said they have less than $25,000 prepared for retirement.
