Sweetheart layoffs|ret||ret||tab|
A pending deal between a Chicago-based cup manufacturer and the parent company of Springfield's Sweetheart Cup Company has slowed employment at the local manufacturing plant at 1100 N. Glenstone. Eight Sweetheart employees received letters in late January saying, "Staffing requirements necessitate laying off employees," according to Scott Innes, one of the machine attendants laid off. Solo Cup Company has offered to purchase Sweetheart Cup parent SF Holdings of Owing Mills, Md., for an undisclosed amount. The deal is expected to finalize in the first quarter this year, according to a Dec. 22 announcement from SF Holdings CEO Dennis Mehiel. "They basically told us their labor costs were too high and they needed to get everything in line for the new company coming in," said Innes, an employee for 12 years. Solo officials were in town Feb. 12-13, Innes said. Telephone calls to local and national Sweetheart Cup officials were not returned.|ret||ret||tab|

Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield celebrated its 65th anniversary in January during the 2004 annual meeting at Highland Springs Country Club. Founded as The Springfield Boys Club Nov. 4, 1938, by Jennie Lincoln, wife of Juvenile Judge A. W. Lincoln, the Boys Club got a charter from the National Boys Clubs of America in April 1946. A girls club was established in 1963 by the Community Service League now known as Junior League. After increased attendance made a full-time administrator a necessity, Genevieve Kynion was hired and she spent 21 years as executive director of the Girls Club. The Boys Club and the Girls Club operated independently until 1991, when they merged to form the Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield. There are three Boys & Girls Clubs locations in Springfield, and a combined membership of 3,067 members. Membership is $15 per semester per child.|ret||ret||tab|
