Springfield Spirit sale

Jordan Valley Park in downtown Springfield will be without its North American Hockey League Jr. A Springfield Spirit team for the upcoming season. Spirit owners are selling the team to interests in Alaska, according to an April 26 news release from ice park officials. The ice park also will be without the $30,000 to $40,000 in annual revenue from the Spirit.

Bass Pro passes

Bass Pro Shops passed the litmus test in Denham Springs, La., where the Springfield outdoor retailer plans to build another Outdoor World. Voters in four Louisiana parishes approved by an average 80 percent margin tax increment financing to help build the store.

The Louisiana Supreme Court earlier sent the TIF to public vote since Bass Pro was seeking public money previously approved for other causes, such as schools and police.

Next for Bass Pro: Mesa, Ariz., voters will decide May 17 the fate of the Riverview at Dobson project and its estimated $80 million incentive package. If approved, the 250-acre project would include Arizona’s first Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World.

Moxie Cinema auction

Moxie Cinema auctioned off the naming rights to its Cinebar concession stand. Winning bidder Steve Olson paid $1,001 on an ebay auction to change the name to the SGFsoccer.com Cinebar.

Olson, a marketing consultant who runs several Web sites, also receives on-screen advertising and two passes for one year of free movies.

The Doula Foundation of Mid-America is holding a fund-raiser luncheon May 7 at The Tower Club. Mommie Me Makeover, featuring keynote speaker Loa Freeman, is 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Twice of Nice

The Cooper Tennis Complex and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board are offering one free tennis lesson to those 6 years old and older throughout the month of May. Nine free lesson dates are planned beginning May 3 and ending May 20. The 90-minute class will focus on fundamental techniques of the game. Equipment is provided.

Additional instruction is offered through Cooper Tennis Complex’s 2005 youth and adult lessons and leagues beginning in early June. Call (417) 837-5800, or visit Cooper Tennis Complex, 2331 E. Pythian St., to sign up for a lesson or to learn more about available programs.

A limited number of youth tennis scholarships are available to those who qualify. Since 1997, more than 50 youth scholarships have been awarded.
