The towns of Republic and Brookline are commemorating their voter-approved consolidation with a pictorial cancellation stamp. The stamp is only available at the Republic Post Office, 660 E. Harrison, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. June 6, the day the consolidation takes effect. A special consolidation ceremony will be held 1–2 p.m. the same day at the Republic Activity Center, 711 E. Miller Road.
Media barrage
The Springfield area has been the center of attention lately for media in the travel industry, according to the Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau. In May, a free-lance travel writer stayed at a Springfield bed and breakfast inn and visited area historical sites and attractions. The writer has been published in Missouri Life, Inn Traveler, Country Discoveries and St. Louis Suburban Journals. The CVB also named 11 publications that recently published travel feature stories about the Springfield area. Among them is AAA Midwest Traveler; The Daily Herald, a suburban Chicago newspaper; Leisure Group Travel; and The Meeting Professional. On June 10 Wonders of Wildlife will host a National Newspaper Association reception for about 25 journalists. The journalists are touring the state and will stay a night in Springfield.
‘130 Summers’
A new baseball exhibit opens June 11 at The History Museum for Springfield-Greene County, 830 Boonville Ave., in old City Hall. “130 Summers: The History of Springfield Baseball” features pictures, timelines and artifacts, including memorabilia from former major leaguers Stan Musial and Mickey Owen and a 1941 World Series ticket. The exhibit runs through Aug. 20. Admission is free, though donations are welcome.

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Southwest Missouri received a $7,000 grant from four Springfield jewelers. Endless Time & Jewelry, Gerzen’s Jewelry Repair, Justice Jewelers and Sharlan Jewelry are members of Jewelers for Children, a not-for-profit organization created to raise money for children’s charities. Since 1999, the nationwide Jewelers for Children has donated more than $14 million to charity. CASA will use the funds to support its work with children in foster care. CASA recruits and trains community volunteers who advocate for children removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect. Greene County has the highest child abuse rate in Missouri, according to CASA.
Twice of Nice
The Cops on Doughnut Shops fund-raising event featured in the May 30 On the Street raised $8,700 for Special Olympics Missouri. Officers with the Springfield Police Department, Greene County Sheriff’s Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop D camped out on the rooftops of Krispy Kreme shops in Springfield and Branson and collected donations from customers.
