Stompin' good time
The 26th annual Great Stone Hill Grape stomp will be held Aug. 9 at the Stone Hill Winery in Hermann. The event will help raise funds for River Bluff Industries Inc., a nonprofit sheltered workshop for the mentally and physically challenged. Registration for stompers begins at 11 a.m.; the stomp begins at 1 p.m. Stompers will be judged on the amount of juice produced, and on stomping style, which includes costumes and stomping techniques. Cash prizes will be awarded to winners in several age categories. Special prizes will be given to the winners of the Grand Stomp-off and the Grand Style Stomp-off. In addition to the stomp, guided tours of the 156-year-old winery will be given. The fee for stompers is $3 each. Watching fees are $2 per person. All fees include the winery tour.
Tax-saving donations
The National Association for the Exchange of Industrial Resources can help businesses save tax dollars. By donating unneeded products, businesses can earn federal income tax deductions. NAEIR takes product donations and redistributes them to schools and other nonprofits nationwide. Since 1977, American corporations have contributed more than $1.6 billion in new products through NAEIR. For more information on product donations, call 1-800-562-0955.
Volunteer advocates
The Victim Center is now accepting applications from volunteers for advocate training that will be held Oct. 10-11 at the Library Center, 4653 S. Campbell. Volunteer advocates are on call twice a month at night or on weekends to respond to hotline phone calls from victims or calls from health care and law enforcement agencies. While most calls require only telephone response, advocates sometimes are summoned to local hospitals or crime scenes to assist victims. The Victim Center conducts interviews and background checks for all applicants prior to acceptance. Applications and information are available from Paula Tindell, victim advocate and volunteer coordinator, by calling 417-863-7273.
Slice of Nice
The 15th annual Pierce City Car Show will be held Aug. 23 at South Park in Pierce City. This year's show is a benefit, with proceeds going to the "Rebuild Pierce City" fund. The car show is presented by the nonprofit Pierce City Car Show Organization.
Because all proceeds of the show will benefit rebuilding efforts, it will not be a judged show with trophies. Instead, it will be a "just for fun" event. The first 200 entries in the show will receive commemorative T-shirts. Dash plaques, and door prizes will be given throughout the day. There are no set entry fees; fees are collected on a donation basis. For more information or to donate door prizes, call 417-466-4620 or 417-476-5795.
