The History Museum for Springfield-Greene County has announced the opening of its new exhibit, "Mothers," which celebrates the profession of motherhood with photographs and artifacts from the museum's permanent collection. The exhibit will run Jan. 17-April 19, with an opening-night reception beginning at 4 p.m. on Jan. 17. The public is invited to submit essays and photographs for the exhibit, expressing why their mothers are special. Essays should be 250 words or less and photos 5-by-7 or smaller. Submissions will be accepted through Jan. 26 and entries will be entered into a drawing with prizes for the winners. The search is under way for the 2003 class of Springfield Business Journal's 40 Under 40 honorees. Nominees for this award, which recognizes Springfield's most outstanding up-and-comers under the age of 40, may be self-nominated or nominated by peers. Nominees must not have received the award previously, and they must work in Springfield or within a 50-mile radius. Nominators may nominate as many individuals as they would like. All nominations must be received by 3 p.m. Feb. 5. Finalists will be announced Feb. 11. An awards ceremony and party will take place 6-9 p.m. April 24 at the Wonders of Wildlife Museum. "Starting a New Business The First Steps," a hands-on class that will provide guidelines for writing a venture start-up of a business expansion loan request, will be held 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Jan. 16 in The Edge community technology center at the Midtown Carnegie Library, 397 E. Central St. The course, which will be taught by Betty Lorton, EdD, business and industry specialist with the University of Missouri Outreach and Extension, also will offer tips for researching market potential online and ideas for creating a feasibility plan.
