Outdoor Cinema

It's time to go to the movies. This summer the Downtown Springfield Community Improvement District is bringing back the CID Outdoor Cinema. The summer series at Founders Park, which started June 20, will continue every weekend until Aug. 16. Sixteen different movies are apart of this year's showing, including: "Monsters Inc.," "The Sound of Music," "E.T." and "Lord of the Rings-The Two Towers." Movies are free with a pass, available at several Springfield businesses, or $5 at the door.

Drury housing

Demolition of Sunderland Hall at Drury University took place during the week of June 16. Construction on a new, $4.5 million, 128-bed residence hall is expected to begin in fall. John Oke-Thomas with Oke-Thomas and Associates Architects is the architect for the new building, which will keep the same name when it opens in August 2005. Sunderland Hall was originally designed by Richard Stahl and opened in1960.

Family assistance

The Missouri National Guard has opened a Family Assistance Center to help the families of deployed military personnel from all branches of the military. The center, located at 1400 N. Fremont Ave., will be open 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Springfield Military Family Assistance Center provides benefit entitlement information on medical and dental benefits. It will serve as a referral center for chaplain assistance and family support groups.

A helping hand

The CoxHealth Foundation received a $10,000 donation for its Cox Family Assistance Fund from the VHA Health Foundation to help Cox employees in need of assistance recovering from recent tornadoes. The fund, established by an anonymous donor to help co-workers in time of crisis, has awarded 25 grants in the last year. At least 32 CoxHealth employee families have reported losses from the storms.

The city of Springfield has added a zoning interactive map to its Web site that allows visitors to view Zoning District information and other types of data, including overlay zones, property lines and lot identification in subdivisions. The maps are found at www.springfieldmogov.org/maps>.

Slice of Nice

A golf tournament benefiting the Bolivar Area YMCA will be held July 14 at Silo Ridge Country Club. Tee time is 8:30 a.m. The cost for a four-person scramble is $480 per team.
