Burn research

St. John's regional burn center has joined the U.S. Consumer Project Safety Commission and about 115 burn centers nationwide in collecting data about serious clothing-related burns to children under age 15. Data collected through this study will help the Consumer Product Safety Commission as it investigates and reviews circumstances surrounding burn injuries. Research collected will help the hospital understand and better prevent burn incidents in the future.

Twice of Nice

Discovery Center of Springfield is partnering with The Salvation Army to gather donated school supplies for area children to use during the coming school year. A collection barrel for supplies including backpacks, glue, scissors, rulers, pens, pencils, paper and calculators has been placed in the lobby of Discovery Center, located at 438 E. St. Louis St. For every school item donated, the Discovery Center will provide a coupon for a buy-one, get-one free admission ticket to the center. Items brought in must be new and still packaged. All school supplies collected will benefit southwest Missouri elementary and middle school students. The school supplies drive will continue through Sept. 1.

Storm damage

Damage from the May tornadoes and severe storms will likely exceed $500 million, according to the Missouri Department of Insurance. MDI Director Scott Lakin said more than 75,000 Missourians will file claims from the storms that produced tornadoes, wind and hail, the majority coming from southwest Missouri. These same storms appear certain to rank No. 2 in Missouri's history of storm losses.
