Fair time
"Sounds Good to Me" is the theme for the 66th annual Ozark Empire Fair, which will be held July 30-Aug. 8 at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds. Grandstand shows will include country stars Trace Adkins, Mark Chesnutt, Jo Dee Messina and Tracy Byrd, contemporary Christian pop artist Stacie Orrico, classic rockers Foghat and modern heavy metal band Saliva. More than 4,000 animals, 40 carnival rides and other exhibits will also be part of the mix. Ongoing updates and exhibit entry information are available online at www.ozarkempirefair.com.
Farm tax credit
Gov. Bob Holden announced in March that more than 700 Missouri farmers received $1.5 million in tax credits for investments they made in Mid-Missouri Energy, a new agricultural cooperative that will produce ethanol. The credits ranged from $1,750 to $2,626 for individual members of the group, which together invested a sum of more than $22 million in the cooperative. The tax credits were issued by the Missouri Agricultural and Small Business Development Authority.
Geraniums for camp
The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary is selling red, white and salmon geraniums through April 23 to raise funds for after-school and summer day camp programs and clothing for children in the Salvation Army Family Shelter. The geraniums sell for $2.50 each, and orders of 25 or more can be delivered. Geraniums also can be picked up May 7 at The Salvation Army, 1707 W. Chestnut Expressway. Got wheels?
The Wheels to Work Program of the Ozarks Area Community Action Corporation is looking for donations of used vehicles in good condition. The automobiles will be repaired and donated to low-income families who need transportation to achieve employment or educational goals. Since the program began in 2000, it has assisted 32 families with their transportation needs. All donations are eligible for Missouri state tax credits via the Neighborhood Assistance Program and a federal tax deduction. Interested donors should call 417-873-3391.
Slice of Nice
Big Brothers Big Sisters will celebrate 100 years with an appreciation banquet at 6 p.m. April 27 in the White River Room at Bass Pro Shops. Anyone with information that could help reunite big brothers and sisters and the children they were paired with should call Big Brothers Big Sisters at 417-889-9136. During the festivities, board members and donors will be honored, and the Big Brother, Big Sister, Couple and After School Mentor of the Year will be announced. Tickets are $20 per person and can be purchased by calling the organization's office.
