Dennis Scott, owner of Dennis’ Place, 921 W. Sunshine, Nov. 19 purchased the former Aldi food store building at 2406 S. Campbell Ave. The 11,000-square-foot building sits on 1.66 acres, said Dave Murray, R.B. Murray vice president, who brokered the transaction for an undisclosed price. Scott hasn’t decided if he will move his 17-year-old bar/restaurant to the new building or have two locations. “It’s all kind of up in the air right now,” Scott said. “More than likely it will be a bar in three or four months.”
Where are the Ducks?
While the Springfield-Ozark Ducks’ front office telephone is disconnected and its Web site (www.ducksprobaseball.com) is shut down, Frontier League officials have put off a decision on the team’s future until Dec. 15. Tim Marting of American Sports Entertainment, Price Cutter Park owner, said his group is holding the park for the team and has not made plans to look for new tenants. The decision on the team’s status in Ozark was originally for Nov. 15 and had already been pushed back to early December. There are reports that team officials are considering a move to a Detroit suburb.
$50,000 challenge
Springfield’s O’Reilly family is challenging the community to raise money for The Kitchen. Through Dec. 31, the O’Reilly family will match every donation to The Kitchen, up to $50,000. The challenge goes out to individuals, businesses, churches, families, foundations, organizations and schools in the Ozarks. The Kitchen provides food, shelter, counseling and rehabilitative programs for the homeless.
Free physical therapy
Physical Therapy Care, 3003 E. Chestnut Expressway, Ste. 150, is offering free physical therapy services for the uninsured during December. Officials at the center, which also is known as Manual Physical Therapy and Industrial Rehab Center PC, say the uninsured in the community deserve such care.
Slice of Nice
The Salvation Army is seeking volunteers for various holiday programs. Bell ringers are needed 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Saturday through Dec. 24. Participating groups can select one or more kettle locations outside Springfield retailers. Individual volunteers and families also are welcome to sign up. Money collected at the red kettles, which display signs recognizing the volunteer groups, provides food, clothing and toys to needy families during the holidays and throughout the year. Also, volunteers are needed to help set up The Salvation Army Holiday Toy Shop, 1707 W. Chestnut Expressway, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 20. The shop, which features toys collected by the Toys for Tots program, is open to needy families Dec. 22 and 23. Volunteers also are needed those days to take families through the shop.
