The Rotary Club of Springfield Sunrise awarded $1,000 to Junior Achievement; $4,000 to Fairbanks Elementary School Principal Gary Tew; $1,000 to the Good Samaritan Boys Ranch; and $2,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Missouri.
The Springfield Area Human Resources Association announced that several of its members recently were certified by the Human Resource Certification Institute. Those members and their companies are: Ronald Breashears, human resources manager, Avatar Components; Linda L. Choate, employment and benefits coordinator, Empire Bank; Layne LaBarge, senior employment specialist, City Utilities of Springfield; Kathryn Morgan, human resources representative, Tower Group International, a FedEx Trade Network company.
Jenny Petty, associate professor and coordinator of library science education, and Cynthia Fielder, University College academic adviser at Southwest Missouri State University, will receive national accolades Oct. 1 at the National Academic Advising Association's annual conference in Salt Lake City. Fielder will receive the Outstanding Adviser Award and Petty will receive a Certificate of Merit for Excellent Faculty Advising.
Tim Russert of the Missouri State Highway Patrol was selected as a member of the Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee.
The following Drury graduates were honored at the June 7 Distinguished Alumni Awards dinner presented by the Drury University Alumni Association:
Bill Cantrell, class of 1942, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award for Service to the Community. Cantrell, a highly decorated World War II fighter pilot, has been a banker, writer, businessman, restaurateur and Springfield civic leader.
Ron Carrier, class of 1986, received the Distinguished Young Alumnus Award for Career Achievement. Carrier, former Greene County Prosecuting Attorney, is now office manager and Chief Counsel for the Springfield office of the Missouri Attorney General.
Michael Mallory, class of 1977, and Dr. Mary Adele King, class of 1961, each received a Distinguished Alumni Award for Career Achievement. Mallory is a mystery writer and journalist in Los Angeles; King is an anesthesiologist and the first female president of the American Osteopathic College of Anesthesiologists in its 45-year history.
Betty Herndon Meyer was awarded the Special Merit Award for her lifelong dedication to the study of religious architecture, evident in her 30-year tenure as editor-in-chief of the journal, "Faith and Form." Drury Alumni also honored Harvey Asher, PhD, professor of history, with a Distinguished Faculty Award. He has spent his entire post-doctoral career at Drury.
Queen City Sertoma Club donated $15,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs, to help fund the furnishing and equipping of a teen center.
Six physicians and two physician assistants volunteered their time to provide free physicals to 360 student athletes as part of the athletic physicals program offered each year by Skaggs Community Health Center. Drs. David Afshar, Rodger Campbell, Randy Cross, Markus Kryger, Daniel McKinney and Bill Zeller, and physician assistants Jim King and Ryan Pock volunteered. They were assisted by 10 nurses and 11 other Skaggs employees.
Rendi J. Thomlinson, staff accountant with BKD LLP, earned the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants' bronze medal award for posting the third-highest score among the 172 successful Missouri CPA exam candidates on the November 2001 exam.
SMSU's department of industrial management was awarded a $30,500 metrology grant from Brown & Sharpe Inc. It will be used to purchase a Browne & Sharpe DCC Gage direct computer control coordinate measuring machine.
Bobby Meritt of Paul Mueller Co. has completed the requirements for a supervision certificate from SMSU's Management Development Institute. He completed 60 hours of classroom attendance.
