The board of directors of the Mercy Regional Health Foundation at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin has approved six grants, totaling $152,683. The grants provided funding for local and rural health services, programs and equipment that otherwise would not be available in the four-state area. Grant recipients include: St. John's MedVan program, which provides transportation to residents receiving health care at St. John's, $80,000; Joplin City Health Department for its weekly free clinic services, $30,000; Joplin Community Health Clinic, which provides free health care for the working poor who have no insurance, $18,000; Operation Community Health, for its free weekly health screenings and information, $15,783; Cowskin Rural Volunteer Fire District to purchase rescue equipment, $7,500; and the Chetopa, Kansas Ambulance Service to purchase emergency equipment and supplies, $1,400.
