Achievements
Kathy Martin, travel consultant at Great Southern Travel, recently completed courses from Disney's College of Knowledge. Martin is now a specialist on all the Disney properties including the Walt Disney World Resorts, the Disney Institute and the Disney Cruise Line.
Two Springfield lawyers, James A. Burt and Susan S. Jensen, were recognized during ceremonies at the 1999 Missouri Bar Annual Meeting. Burt, a shareholder in The Strong Law Firm, PC, was presented with the W. Oliver Rasch Award, as author of an article appearing in The Journal of The Missouri Bar in 1998. Jensen, an associate with the firm Pratt & Fossard, was one of the three recipients of the David J. Dixon Appellate Advocacy Award, recognizing outstanding achievement in appellate practice by members of the Missouri Bar who have been in practice fewer than 10 years.
Four Springfield attorneys, Bill H. Clampett, Gerald H. Lowther, Wallace N. Springer Jr. and Buell Franklin Weathers, were honored as senior counselors of the Missouri Bar. Senior counselors are attorneys who have reached the age of 75 and who have been admitted to the Missouri Bar for 50 years.
The lawyers of Missouri elected 11 new members to the board of governors of the Missouri Bar and retained nine incumbents for new terms. New members from the Springfield area are John Cowherd of Mt. Vernon and Dee Wampler of Springfield. Wallace S. Squibb of Springfield was an incumbent elected to another term on the Young Lawyers' Section Council.
The following awards were presented at the Co-Operative Sertoma Club of Springfield's annual installation and awards banquet: Charles Crowley, Dixie Keltner, Rosalyn Saddler and Bill Hutcherson received the GEM Award; Dixie Keltner, Anne Miles and Donna Riseman received the Centurion Award; Charles Crowley, Dixie Keltner, Tom Lewis, Anne Miles and Donna Riseman received the Spark Plug Award; Kelley Morrison, Charles Moody, Susie Moody and Kay Lewis received new member appreciation pins; Bill Hutcherson received a presidential service plaque; Anne Milles received a secretary service pin; Lucile Henderson received the Service to Mankind Award; and Marcia Trainor received Sertoman of the Year.
Jazzercise instructor Kelly Sweeney, owner of Springfield Jazzercise, received the company's Innovation/Pioneering Award at the Jazzerjam '99 International Fitness Convention in San Diego. The award goes to franchisees who use the Jazzercise tools as a springboard to success in pioneering new ways to market Jazzercise.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association awarded KOLR-TV first place nationally for work in Telethon Promotions. Sisco Excellence in Teaching Award at a joint convention of the Southern and Central States Communication Associations held in St. Louis. The award, renamed to honor Sisco, SMSU professor of communication, is given to an outstanding communications teacher.
Jack Gilliam, managing director at Prudential's Springfield agency, was selected to attend the company's President's Conference in San Diego. Managers were selected to attend in recognition of their excellence in managing the sales of insurance and financial products, and in providing quality customer service.
The Long Term Care Ombudsman Program was named 1999 recipient of the National Council of Churches Ecumenical/Interfaith Service Award, presented in Cleveland, Ohio, Nov. 10. The program was recognized for its commitment to ensure the quality of life for residents of nursing homes and skilled nursing residential care facilities.
John Cole, retired president of Mueller International Sales Corp., volunteered six weeks with Home Care Company in Sixth of October City, Egypt. Cole helped an insecticide company establish an organization chart and job descriptions for the international department. He also evaluated export markets, chose distributors and outlined a five-year export plan, conducting the project for the International Executive Service Corps.
Roddy Rogers, PE, was recently reappointed to the Missouri Dam and Reservoir Safety Council and is beginning his eighth year on the council and his third year as chair. The seven-member council is a non-paid body appointed by the governor.
Community Foundation of the Ozarks elected new officers for 1990-2000. On the board of directors are: William R. Hardie, chairman; Dr. Arthur Mallory, chairman-elect; Mary Beth O'Reilly, treasurer; Katy Tynes, secretary; and William H. Darr, at-large member of the executive committee. Dr. Kathleen Griesemer and Ronald Ponds joined the board of directors. Newly elected members of the advisory council are Julie Turner-Brown, Marcia Johnson, William Miller, Chris Nattinger, Dr. Nancy O'Reilly and Maura Taylor.
Ozark Empire Fair received awards at the national convention of the International Association of Fairs and Expositions held Nov. 28-Dec. 1 in Las Vegas. The fair took first place for Division II fairs, which have an attendance of 100,001 to 250,000. It also won Best Advertising Campaign for the 1999 ad campaign "Forecast Fair" and won first place for TV advertising.

CASA's newly elected board members are: William H. James B. Anderson, president of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, achieved requirements for maintaining an active status as a certified chamber executive, the only national certification for chamber of commerce professionals. Requirements for the designation include professional achievements and activities, completing an examination and interview.
Bank of America presented $10,000 to the Salvation Army. The Bank of America Foundation gift was presented at the annual Gold Kettle Luncheon.
The National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs Inc. awarded BPW 2000 certification to Greater Ozarks Business and Professional Women of Springfield at the annual BPW/USA convention held in Rochester, N.Y. The 2000 certification program works to create stronger, more dynamic BPW locals by the year 2000.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of America recently held its annual conference in Phoenix, Ariz. Attending from the Missouri chapter were: Louise Henson, president; Victor Tyler, president-elect; Alexis Slyter, wish coordinator; and Arla Price executive director.
Springfield City Councilwoman Shelia Wright was reelected to the board of directors of the Missouri Municipal League for a two-year term. MML is made up of nearly 600 municipalities in Missouri, with a goal of "strengthening cities through unity and cooperation."
Kiwanis Club of Springfield South announced its leadership for 1999-2000: Stan Arnoldy, president; David Neill, president-elect; Dan Wichmer, vice president; Bob Dean, secretary; Ken Horn, treasurer; and Karl Lippelman, immediate past president. Thomas E. Russo, chair and associate professor of art and art history at Drury University, received a $30,000 fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities for his project, "The Romanesque Sculpture of Lincolnshire, England: A Digital Datatbase." It is a photographic and textual database documenting the sculpture produced in Lincolnshire County between 1050 and 1200 A.D.
Shawn Ritenour, assistant professor of business administration at Southwest Baptist University, was one of 15 contributing authors of the recently published book, "15 Great Austrian Economists." He wrote Chapter 14, titled, "Wilhelm Roepke: A Humane Economist."
Dr. Thomas Dickson, SMSU professor of communications and mass media, had his book, "Mass Media Education in Transition: Preparing for the Twenty-first Century," published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. He was also accepted to travel to Cuba for the International Faculty Development seminar scheduled over winter break.
Dr. Kelly McNeilis, SMSU assistant professor of communications and mass media, had her article, titled, "Analyzing Communication Competence in Medical Consultants" accepted in the Health Communication Journal. It will appear in a special edition in 2000.
