The Missouri Department of Transportation was recognized by The Missouri Interagency Recycling Committee for its used-tire recycling program. Judy Bonner, a licensed practical nurse, and Tammie Hankins, a certified physical therapy assistant, at Skaggs Community Health Center in Branson, were nominated by their coworkers as team builders for the month of November. Lopinot, director of SMSU's Center of Archaeological Research, and Gina Powell, reasearch archaeologist for the center, received $6,928.35 from Bear Creek Archaeology Inc. and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Rock Island District for the project "Archaeobotany of the Cross Site, Louisa County, Iowa, for Bear Creek Archaeology and the Rock Island District, Army Corps of Engineers."
Dick Smith, SMSU assistant professor of technology, was sworn in as the new 2000 chair during the Honor Awards and Officer Installation Banquet held by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. Smith also received $1,500 from the Missouri Enterprise Business Assistance Center for the project "Research Development and Testing of Grout Wrap."
Debi Richardson, associate planner for SMSU's Center for Resource Planning and Management, received $1,278 from the city of Hollister for the project "City of Hollister CDBG Eligibility and Review and LMI Survey."
Dr. Mary Hoak, lecturer in SMSU's department of modern and classical languages, presented a paper at the Southern Comparitive Literature Association meeting in Knoxville, Tenn., titled, "Joan of Arc in Film: Interpretations Through the Decades."
Edward DeLong, SMSU assistant professor of library science, was elected chairman of the Springfield Cable Television Advisory Commission.
Wes Summers, vice president and commercial account executive at Great Southern Bank, was awarded the Distinguished Graduate Award by the Society of Insurance Trainers and Educators. He scored the highest cumulative grade average in the nation on a series of insurance-related exams, leading to an associate in managment designation. Summers received a $500 cash reward and a plaque for his achievements.
Lynn Morris, pharmacist and owner of Family Pharmacies, attended Applied Diabetes Management Program: Using a Case-Based, Problem-Solving Approach, held at the Lake of the Ozarks. The class comprised 18 continuing education hours.
Patsy Haley, RN, OCN, and Lucille Laughlin, RN, BS, OCN, received the first Glauser Oncology Fund Nurse Award from the Glauser Oncology Fund of the Cox Healthcare Foundation. Both winners received an award of up to $1,500 to further their oncology nursing training.
The pulic relations department at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin received three Show-Me Excellence awards from the Missouri Association for Healthcare Public Relations and Marketing for high achievement and supurb quality in commuications and public relations. St. John's also received the following awards: second place in employee communications projects for the 1998 Mercy Week Celebration; second place in television advertising for St. John's Cardiac Christmas campaign; and third place in television advertising for the Life's Calling image campaign.

Cox Health Systems Auxiliary was named Auxiliary of the Year by the Missouri Association of Hospital Auxiliaries, honoring the more than 800 members of Cox Health Systems Auxiliary, which donated more than 107,692 hours of service to the hospital and community from Sept. 1, 1998, to Aug. 31, 1999.
