The Students in Free Enterprise team at Drury University finished first in its league at a regional competition held April 10 in Atlanta, Ga. The team was also named one of the 15 national finalists in the USA Today Make a Difference Day competition.|ret||ret||tab|
Southwest Missouri State University announced several staff and faculty accomplishments. Kristine Kaatz and Dr. James Kaatz, director of the Center for Social Science and Public Policy, and assistant professor of public policy, respectively, received $21,450 from the city of Festus for their project entitled "Comprehensive Personnel and Compensation System for the City of Festus, Mo." Dr. Joyce Dana, director of the Southwest Regional Professional Development Center, received $231,525 from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to fund the center's programs. Gina Powell, a research archaeologist at the Center for Archaeological Research, was awarded $1,884 from Carlson, Goodman Woodward Properties Inc./Housing and Urban Development for her project titled "Phase I Cultural Resources Survey for Countryview Estates, Buffalo, Mo." Dr. Mary Harges, associate professor of modern and classical language, and Dr. Larry George, professor of modern and classical languages, presented papers at the Creighton Conference on Language and Literature 2000 held in Omaha, Neb. Harges' paper was titled "Rosa Montero's Paulo Pumilio': Prescriptions for the Post-Franco Anti-Hero." George's paper was titled "Exploring Culture and Language Through Technology." Dr. Rex Cammack, assistant professor of geology, geography and planning, was awarded $5,331 from the Greene County Local Emergency Planning Committee for his hazardous materials transportation study project. Dr. Carole Anne Constible-Heming, associate professor of modern and classical languages, presented a paper, "The Stasi Revisited: Literary Representation of the Stasi," at the Taking Stock: Germany 2000 conference. Dr. Gerald Masterson, assistant professor of health, physical education and recreation, was inducted into the Arkansas Track and Field Hall of Fame.|ret||ret||tab|
The National Academic Advising Association will honor Dr. Randy Dillon, associate professor of communications and mass media, as an outstanding adviser Oct. 7. Dr. Beth Hurst, assistant professor of reading, had her article entitled, "How Do You Get Students to Read in Content Area Classrooms," accepted in the Transescent, a Missouri middle school journal. Dr. Linda Garrison-Harrell and Dr. Jane Doelling, associate professors of special education, Paris Depaepe, assistant professor of special education, Chris Craig, director of the School of Education and George Calhoun, associate dean of the college of education, received $576,011 from the U.S. Dept. of Education for the Standards-Based Training and Retention of Rural Special Educators. Dr. Deanne Camp, associate professor of reading, gave a presentation entitled, "If You Can Write a Lesson Plan, You Can Write an Article," at the International Reading Association's Conference in Indianapolis, Ind. Dr. Beth Hurst, assistant professor of reading, presented "Writing for the Reading Teacher: An Idea Becomes an Article," at the same conference. Dr. James R. Larry Rottman, editor and publisher of the Cross Country Times in Willard and The Commonwealth in Ash Grove, received first-place honors in the 1999 Heart of America Media Awards contest, sponsored by the Kansas City Press Club and the Society of Professional Journalists. The honor was in the print media editorial category, for his column titled "The Man No One Knew," about the death of a homeless man. Rottman's editorial originally appeared in the Republic Monitor.
