Republic Elementary II teacher Gayle Cooper received a 1998 Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Award for excellence in teaching. Wal-Mart presented a $500 grant to the school in Cooper's honor.
She was one of more than 1,700 teachers so honored across the country whose schools received a total of $850,000.
