Chamber announces events for March
The next general membership meeting of the Nixa Area Chamber of Commerce will be noon-1 p.m. March 9 at Smitty's Restaurant.
A membership drive will be held March 11 at Empire Bank, 502 W. Mt. Vernon, starting at 8 a.m.
Working Women in Nixa will meet March 16 at noon at Empire Bank.
Police Department offers Citizen's Academy
Businesspeople and citizens who would like to know more about the role and function of the Ozark Police Department are invited to apply for the fourth annual Citizen's Academy.
The six-week course meets on Tuesdays, 6:30-9 p.m., March 23 through April 27 at Ozark High School. Topics include police procedures, investigations, basic self-defense, traffic law and enforcement, DWI law, domestic violence, street gangs and courtroom procedures.
Those interested in the course may get an application at the Ozark Police Department, 206 N. First Street, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday or 8 a.m.-11 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Class size is limited. Applications must be received by March 17. For more information, call Lt. Scott Cline at 581-6600.
President named for Development Authority
Katherine Dowdy is the new president of the Ozark Community Development Authority, a nonprofit group dedicated to revitalizing the cultural and architectural heritage of downtown Ozark. The 30-member group's board of directors also includes Pat Stewart, vice president; Kerry May, treasurer; Susan Marier, secretary; Sue Larimer, archivist; and John Dillon, public relations.
The group met Feb. 25 to discuss plans for the upcoming year. Monthly meetings are held at 7 p.m. the fourth Thursday of the month at Dowdy's office, 115 E. Church Street.
Republic chamber announces spring events
A Business Expo sponsored by the Republic Area Chamber of Commerce will be held 4-8 p.m. April 22 at the Republic Activities Center. Booth spaces are available to chamber members for $25 per table. The admission price has not been set. For more information, contact Christy Hermansen at 732-3356.
The chamber and Republic Parks and Recreation will join forces in a golf tournament beginning at 8 a.m. May 22 at Eagle Crest Golf Course. The cost per player, including lunch, is $40. Strafford hires its first paid firefighter
Walter Williams recently began working as the town's first paid firefighter to augment the city's 16 volunteers, most of whom work out of town during the day.
Williams, who has previous fire-fighting experience and has been a Strafford volunteer for a year, is studying to become a paramedic. Williams also maintains equipment for the Strafford Fire Protection District, which has three fire stations in and around Strafford, funded by a special tax.
