In the kitchen, a sleek natural wood countertop brings warmth to the area used as an employee gathering place. It’s complemented by a colorful commissioned art piece. “Orange is kind of our company color, so we accented with that,” says Brad Palmer, principal and lead engineer.

Works Well

Fellow principal Tanner Dowling, standing, and Palmer share an office, which offers a view of Campbell Avenue and ample natural light. “We always thought the building was a beautiful structure,” Palmer says. “It spoke for itself on the outside.”

Nod to the Past

The upstairs conference room has the most telling clue of the building’s past life: the firehouse’s original lockers and fire pole opening, which is now covered by a plate steel cutout of Intrepres’ logo. “It was a decision on the fly we made to keep these,” Palmer says.

Sound the Alarm

The garage and apparatus bay walls remain the same black color, still showcasing old alarm equipment snaking throughout the ceiling. It’s set aside for future expansion. “It would be a great place to work because you can pop the doors open,” Palmer says.

The L-shaped light on the ground floor can be dimmed and change colors – even to Interpres orange.

The old firehouse near Fassnight Creek is back in action. Dormant since 2002, Interpres Building Solutions LLC bought Fire Station No. 6 and brought it back to life in the spring. In the estimated $150,000-$200,000 office renovation, the half-dozen-employee engineering firm handled the mechanical, electrical and plumbing work. The office blends modern designs with preservation of the two-story firehouse’s character.
