Obesity panel proposes tax on sugary foods

The Dietary Guidelines and Advisory Committee is recommending Americans pay more for sugary foods and drinks as a way to curb unhealthy habits, Bloomberg reports.

The nonpartisan panel of academics and scientists which helps shape school lunch menus and the WIC food-assistance program, has recommended a tax on sweets in its most recent report to the departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services.  

Meat consumption is also in the group’s crosshairs as the Obama administration seeks ways to address the nation’s weight problem – according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in three adults and 17 percent of children in the U.S. are obese.
