Obama's approval rating mirrors Bush's in 2006 midterms

If a new New York Times/CBS News Poll is any predictor of the upcoming midterm elections, Democrats are in trouble.

President Barack Obama’s approval rating was at 40 percent, just three percentage points above President George W. Bush in 2006 when Democrats took control of both houses of Congress in his second midterm elections.

Among all likely voters, 45 percent said they favored Republican candidates in the November elections versus 39 percent who are planning to vote for Democratic candidates.

Republicans also have the edge among voters when it comes to dealing with terrorism, the economy and foreign policy.
