Obama: Democrats distorting facts on trade proposal

President Barack Obama on Friday accused fellow Democrats of intentionally distorting the potential impact of a sweeping new trade accord he is negotiating with leaders in Asia dubbed the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Obama, speaking at Nike headquarters in Oregon, said liberal opponents were making up claims and standing in the way of a modern competitive economy.

Those fighting the president’s push for an agreement argue that liberalizing trade would only increase U.S. companies’ reliance on low-wage workers producing goods in Asia. Freer trade would boost the economy and create jobs here, Obama and Nike CEO Mark Parker said at the Friday news conference, according to the New York Times.
