President Barack Obama announced Thursday an administrative change to his sweeping health care reform law that allows insurers to offer individual insurance plans for another year, even if those plans don’t comply with the Affordable Care Act.
Obama is responding to pressure from upset consumers and members of Congress in an effort to avoid broader changes to the law, according to the Washington Post. As part of the plan, the Department of Health and Human Service is notifying state insurance commissioners that they have permission to allow the policies through 2014.
However, at least one state, Washington, has since announced it would not allow insurers to extend those policies because it was satisfied with how its state-based exchange was working, the Post reports.
