NY attorney general opens probe of Trump Foundation

Posted online
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman yesterday announced his office opened an inquiry into the Donald J. Trump Foundation.

Schneiderman, a supporter of Trump's Democratic rival in the presidential race, Hillary Clinton, said the probe is meant to make sure the Republican presidential nominee's charity has complied with state laws for nonprofits.

"My interest in this issue really is in my capacity as regulator of nonprofits in New York state. And we have been concerned that the Trump Foundation may have engaged in some impropriety from that point of view," Schneiderman said. "We have been looking into the Trump Foundation to make sure it's complying with the laws that govern charities in New York."

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said the attorney general's claims are motivated by political interests, rather than any wrongdoing by the foundation.
