NRA sues Seattle over $25 gun tax

Posted online
The National Rifle Association filed suit Monday against the city of Seattle over a new law intended to raise city funds by imposing taxes on the purchase of guns and ammunition.

The tax levies a $25 tax for every gun sold in the Emerald City and between 2 and 5 cents on every bullet. The city projects to raise between $300,000 and $500,000 a year, and estimates its taxpayers are currently footing the bill for $12 million of an annual $17 million in medical costs toward the cost of treating gunshot wounds.

The suit, filed by the NRA in conjunction with the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the Second Amendment Foundation, and two Seattle gun shops and two individuals, claims the newly approved city law violates Washington state gun control laws and will harm small businesses.
