NPR, union reach deal to avoid worker walkout

NPR and the SAG-AFTRA labor union struck a contract deal during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Of NPR's 800 employees, 433 of them are said to be SAG-AFTRA members. Employees last week announced plans to walk out if a deal wasn't reached.

The tentative three-year deal still needs to be approved by unionized employees. SAG-AFTRA said in a statement Sunday the new contract "provides for salary increases" and "effectively repelled" a proposed two-tier salary system that would have paid new hires less than veteran staffers.
