Notre Dame fire probably accidental, prosecutors say

Posted online

French prosecutors said Tuesday the fire that severely damaged the Notre Dame cathedral was probably the result of an accident.

“We are favoring the theory of an accident,” Paris public prosecutor Remy Heitz said, noting 50 people are working on the investigation.

More than 400 firefighters worked through the night to bring the fire under control. It consumed the rool and collapsed the spire.

Notre Dame had been under renovations, including reconstruction of the spire's wooden frame.
