Northwest Mo. wind farm plans fold fearing fight with birds

Posted online
An Oregon-based energy company’s $400 million plan to construct the Show-Me State’s largest wind farm is now, well, for the birds.

Element Power had been looking to build 84 to 118 nearly 350-foot tall wind turbines near a national bird sanctuary in Holt County in northwest Missouri. The problem: the turbines would have been directly in the path of migratory birds. The proposed site was near Mound City, on 25,000 acres just east of Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge.

One biology professor at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph called the proposed site the worst possible location in northern Missouri. Company officials couldn’t be reached for comment by deadline as to why they pulled plans and terminated its related land lease, according to the Kansas City Star.
