North Town Mall comes down

Posted online

Demolition on Springfield’s North Town Mall has begun to make way for the city’s fifth Wal-Mart Supercenter, which should open its doors by late next year.

Fogel-Anderson Construction Co. is the general contractor for the $6.2 million project. A client list on the Kansas City-based company’s Web site includes a number of big-box retailers, such as Kmart, Toys-R-Us and Whole Foods Markets. BRR Architecture of Merriam, Kan., is the architect.

The Supercenter project under way at the northeast corner of North Glenstone Avenue and East Kearney Street is somewhat unique in that an adjacent Wal-Mart store at 1923 E. Kearney will remain open during demolition of the vacant, 280,000-square-foot mall and construction of the new store.

Wal-Mart’s message to customers: “Just bear with us during construction,” said spokeswoman Carrie Thum.

Thum didn’t know how many, if any, Supercenters had been built in a similar manner.

A tentative opening date was unavailable, but Thum said that a typical build cycle for a new Supercenter is one year from the time construction begins, depending on weather.

According to building plans filed with the city in February, the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer will build the new Supercenter on the former mall site and then raze the existing store to make room for a 37,000-square-foot addition on the Supercenter’s east side.

The 187,000-square-foot store will have a garden center, automotive center, vision center and pharmacy. And like some of its counterparts around town, the newest Supercenter will have an interior Subway restaurant, according to the plans.

Landscaping plans show that trees will be planted along the main North Town Mall entrance off of Kearney, which will remain the primary point of ingress and egress for customer traffic.

An acre fronting Glenstone on the property’s west side also has been identified on the plans as a future leasing area.

Wal-Mart was the first store to open in North Town Mall, which turned 30 years old this year. The last handful of mall tenants – USA Furniture, Another Comic Shop and a Subway franchise – all moved out within the last year and a half. [[In-content Ad]]
