North-side bakery closes

June's Cakery has closed its doors after more than four decades operating on the north side.

A Facebook post indicates the 2545 E. Division St. bakery shuttered Friday.

Reached this morning, owner Ella Buchanan said she’s retiring.

“It’s very bittersweet,” she said, noting she’s had health problems in recent years. “It’s time. I just cannot do the work anymore. It’s just too physically demanding.”

Buchanan said she’s also negotiating a sale of the building, but she declined to name the buyer.

Buchanan took over operations of the shop in 1997, following the death of her mother, founder June Buchanan, in 1996. The year ahead of its 30th anniversary, the shop did $81,000 in revenue in 2004, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.

June's Cakery sold wedding, birthday, graduation and baby shower cakes, among other products, according to its website. Separate Facebook posts indicate the business stopped taking orders for wedding cakes in May 2019 and ended all cake orders in January.

June's Cakery started in a rental unit at the corner of Cherry Street and Glenstone Avenue in 1975, and 18 months later, moved to its current home on East Division Street, according to its website.
