Noranda files for bankruptcy

Noranda Aluminum Holding Corp., which operates a smelter in New Madrid, Mo., has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The Franklin, Tenn.-based company listed assets and liabilities in the $1 billion to $10 billion range.

Last month, the company announced it would lay off 350 works at the New Madrid aluminum smelter and could decide to shut it down completely.

Noranda is Ameren Missouri's largest customer, spending some $168 million on electricity in 2014.
