Noranda cuts workers at New Madrid site, might shutter facility

A Franklin, Tenn.-based aluminum foil and light steel manufacturer’s facility in southeast Missouri is laying off more employees, and may be closing its doors by mid-March.

Noranda Aluminum Holding Corp. announced 350 workers would leave its New Madrid plant by Feb. 4 – in addition to 140 laid off Wednesday.

According to the St. Louis Business Journal, the company idled two of three production lines last week due to electrical supply failure. The largest customer for power supplier Ameren Missouri, Noranda said the plant could shutter by March 12 unless better electrical rates are secured.
