Nonprofits challenge MO licensing law for insurance guides

Posted online
Several groups that have received federal grants to help people sign up for insurance under the Affordable Care Act are suing the state of Missouri, according to NPR.

Groups involved include the St. Louis Effort for AIDS, the Consumer Council of Missouri and Missouri Jobs with Justice.

Missouri law requires groups acting as health insurance helpers called navigators to be licensed by passing an exam and paying a fee. The claim argues this is an unnecessary restriction that prohibits the Missouri public from receiving information about health insurance from the person or source of their choosing.

Missouri is one of more than a dozen states where similar laws have been passed that restrict certain parties from helping people sign up for insurance on the new exchanges.
