Cost: $23.8 million
Estimated completion: December 2027
Project description: This project to construct three new cells is a major expansion of the city of Springfield’s Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill, which receives some 1,200 tons of waste daily. The work requires extensive heavy rock excavation and earthwork shaped by what project officials say are challenging geologic conditions on the 1,200-acre site. Crews are also installing new stormwater systems along with gas and leachate utilities to strengthen long-term environmental management. The project involves relocating and regrading 60,000 cubic yards of previously buried waste under strict safety and air-monitoring protocols to extend the facility’s lifespan by a decade. SCS Engineers is the civil engineer for the project.
