No resolution for neighbors of 'malfunction junction'

Posted online

Neighbors of the 13-acre tract of land near the intersection of James River Freeway, Glenstone Avenue and Republic Road again filled City Council chambers June 21 to hear council's decision on rezoning the land near the Pat Jones YMCA for general retail. The land is owned by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

However, Jud Heflin, who represents Jones' Blue Star Investments, contacted the city attorney's office just hours before council was set to vote on the bill and requested the application be amended to request a different zoning district classification.

The request, made under Section 3-3711.B of the Springfield Zoning Ordinance, gave council no discretion in the matter, according to the city attorney's office. This section of the code requires the application to be returned to the Planning and Zoning Commission before any vote is taken by council.
