No Brie for Moscow as cheese stacks up in France on ban

Russia's 143 million citizens are hoarding Brie from France. That's because earlier this month, the communist nation enacted a trade embargo with the European Union and the United States in retaliation for sanctions over Ukraine.

According to Bloomberg, French cheese exports to Russia climbed 29 percent to 49.5 million euros – $66 million – last year and Brie shipments rose 37 percent.

Now that Russian's have a taste for the soft cheese, they aren't willing to give it up so easily, leaving some to speculate on an artisan cheese black-market. Bloomberg reports Russia's cheesemongers are worried about how they will survive as the majority of their product comes from France and Switzerland.

The French, however, are confident it will be business as usual.
