No. 25 Springfield Underground

Posted online
It all started with an attempted farm pond.

Henry Griesemer was unsuccessful in his attempt in northern Springfield in 1946, but he did find limestone at the dig site.

With the help of his brother, Joseph, the two started mining the limestone, and by 1960 had dug a hole big enough to start leasing underground storage.

What started out as an accidental find has led to one of Springfield’s most geologically interesting business ventures.

Much of the development’s growth has occurred in the last 30 years.

Springfield Underground, which leases below-ground space to companies for energy-efficient secure warehouses and offices, was named developer of the year in 2008 by the Springfield Contractors Association.

The development’s biggest project to date dates back to July 28: a 400,000-square-foot Kraft distribution center, completely underground.

On June 26, 2006, the Springfield City Council approved an annexation request for 545 acres of 5.66 acres of Greene County right-of-way in northwest Springfield for Springfield Underground to develop.

The family owned-Springfield Underground has more than 2.2 million square feet of space and houses several warehouses and offices, and the Griesemer family’s involvement has continued through the years.

Several members of the family have had key roles in the company, including President and CEO Louis Griesemer, Vice President John Griesemer and Vice President of Business Development Stephen Griesemer who also is general counsel.
