Nixon proposes $2M in SEMO lead cleanup projects

Gov. Jay Nixon yesterday proposed four restoration and development projects in areas of southeast Missouri impacted by decades of lead mining.

The governor said proposals totaling nearly $2 million have been submitted to the Missouri Trustee Council, which oversees about $49 million in funds from an environmental damage settlement with American Smelting and Refining Co.

Nixon is calling for restoration work at a 40-acre county park in St. Francois County; Little St. Francois River in Madison County; the Logtown Branch and Slime Creek tributaries of the Little St. Francois River; and the city of Park Hills in St. Francois County.
