Nixa mayor running for state House seat

Posted online

Brian Steele, who recently overcame a recall petition as mayor of Nixa, announced his candidacy for the Missouri House of Representatives.

Steele is seeking the District 139 seat in Christian County, according to a news release.

Running as a Republican, Steele's campaign focuses, in part, on economic development and public safety. As Nixa's mayor, Steele said he has helped the city reduce its debt by 80% without raising taxes and expanded and updated regional infrastructure.

"What we have done in Nixa, I would love to do for the state of Missouri," he said in the release. “We need representation that understands the unique issues facing our community, not just an ability to regurgitate conservative talking points."

Steele currently works as a lead data architect for Chicago-based technology company 3Cloud Solutions and owns three Nixa small businesses with his wife, DeeDee.

His campaign announcement pointed to the November recall petition, in which roughly 75% of voters kept him in office. The petition called on the removal of Steele over a coronavirus face mask mandate he instituted in 2020, Springfield Business Journal previously reported.

“It was really a referendum on our progress as a city," Steele said in the release. “The support we received has been extremely encouraging. People are looking for candidates with a proven track record of serving the people and actually getting things done.”

The District 139 seat in the House currently is held by Rep. Jered Taylor, R-Republic. He’s terming out this year, according to a spokesperson with his office.

Steele and Republican Chandler Haynes are the only candidates who have filed paperwork with the Missouri Ethics Commission for the seat.

Haynes is a personal banker who is running as a supporter of former President Donald Trump's policies, according to his campaign website.
