Area firefighters fought the blaze all night at the small business, which modifies vehicles for off-road and recreational use. Today, the district said the explosion was caused by vapors from a used motor oil furnace, which occupants were trying to light to heat the building, according to a news release.
“The Nixa Fire Protection District reminds citizens that alternative heating devices should be operated and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer requirements,” the release said. “Maintenance of auxiliary heating devices should be performed by experienced and trained professionals.”
Employees were in the building at the time of the explosion, but there were no fatalities. The building, 422 S. Patricia Ave., was a total loss.
