National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins is stepping down by year's end.
A 12-year employee who has served three U.S. presidents, Collins said "it's time to bring in a new scientist to lead the NIH into the future."
President Joe Biden is tasked with naming a successor, who must be confirmed by the Senate.
