Nickelodeon's underwater theme park plan causes uproar

Environmentalists and their political allies are seeking to stop Nickelodeon from building an underwater theme park in the Philippines.

The attraction announced Monday would be part of a 988-acre development planned in Palawan.

Philippines Environment Secretary Gina Lopez on Twitter opposed the plans and said she "won't allow" construction to move forward.

"The only infrastructure in the water is floating and all developments are on land," Coral World Park officials said in a statement.

That contrasted with the Monday announcement calling the park the "world's first undersea attraction to be built in Asia" and a resort featuring "underwater restaurants and lounges."
