NFL gets billions in subsidies from U.S. taxpayers

Posted online
While the Super Bowl is still fresh in everyone’s mind, consider this: If you're a U.S. taxpayer, then you're subsidizing the wildly profitable National Football League.

CNNMoney reports the NFL is the most profitable pro sports league in the U.S., raking in an estimated $1 billion in profits on $10.5 billion in revenue last season.

The nonprofit league’s profits are possible through billions of taxpayer dollars spent on teams by local governments, coupled with tax breaks. An example: The current St. Louis Rams debate brewing in Jefferson City.

CNNMoney reports 20 NFL stadiums have opened since 1997 with the help of $4.7 billion in taxpayer funds. In addition to construction help, elected officials vying for a team often offer discounted city services, such as utilities or police patrolling a stadium on game day.

Teams also often receive big breaks on their property taxes.
