Newspapers surpass recycling goal

Posted online
Missouri newspapers met the state’s recycling challenge and saved nearly 2 million trees in 2004.

The 85 newspapers in the state that have a daily distribution of 15,000 or more reported a 58 percent recycled content usage. Of the 199,759 tons of newspaper produced, 115,203 tons were made from recycled paper, according to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

About 17 trees are saved for every ton of paper made from recycled materials.

Missouri law dictates that newspapers meeting the distribution mark must report use of recycled content each year. If publications do not meet the state’s goal of 50 percent, they must claim an exemption to explain their circumstances. Eighteen of Missouri’s newspapers claimed exemptions in 2004, citing cost and or supply problems.

Since 1999, Missouri newspapers have met the 50 percent goal. Recycled content usage in 1996, the goal’s first year, was 36 percent. In 2003, 52 percent of content was recycled.
