California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the selection of Laphonza Butler as his appointment to succeed Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
Feinstein, 90, died Friday. She was the longest-serving female senator in U.S. history with more than 30 years in the Senate.
Butler leads Emily’s List, an organization that helps Democratic women win elections.
