Patrick Walsh was named vice president of planning and marketing at CoxHealth. Walsh previously served as senior vice president of strategic planning with the Sisters of Mercy Health Corp.; vice president of planning, project management and business development with Carondelet Health System; and most recently as vice president of planning at Via Christi Regional Medical Center in Wichita, Kan. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Benedictine College and an MBA and Master of Science in Public Health from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Drs. Eliot M. Nissenbaum and Naginder Sharma joined Branson’s Skaggs Cardiology Associates. The two doctors specialize in cardiovascular diseases and both have expertise in the evaluation and treatment of chest pain, heart attack, high blood pressure, heart failure, cardiac causes of shortness of breath and edema. Dr. J. Humberto Hernandez of St. John’s Clinic-Cassville recently completed requirements for recertification by the American Board of Family Practice. To achieve recertification, family physicians must complete an office record review process, verify the completion of 300 hours of acceptable continuing medical education during the past six years, possess a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States and complete a one-day, written examination of cognitive knowledge and problem-solving abilities covering the disciplines of the specialty. Dr. Taquir Ahmed, FACS, was accepted as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Surgeons seeking fellowship must pass a thorough evaluation of professional competence and ethical fitness. Those who are named fellows are committed to the following principles: to unequivocally place the welfare of patients above any other consideration; to avoid division of fees with other physicians; to make fees commensurate with the services rendered; and to refrain from performing unjustified operations. Dr. Shang-Chiun Lee joined St. John’s Clinic-Cardiology in Springfield. Prior to attending medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Lee earned a Ph.D. in biological sciences at the University of North Texas. He recently completed his cardiology and electro physiology fellowships at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Eric Guilliams joined St. John’s Clinic-Urology in Springfield. He earned his medical degree at the University of Tennessee-Memphis, after graduating summa cum laude from Tulane University in New Orleans. He is board-certified in urology. Dr. Rachelle Muriel-Leonardo joined St. John’s Hospitalists in Springfield. As a hospitalist, she is a dedicated inpatient physician who manages inpatient care for general adult medicine patients referred by primary care physicians in the community. Muriel-Leonardo completed an internal medicine residency at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. She is fellowship-trained in cardiology and is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Scott H. Clarke joined St. John’s Pain Management Center at St. John’s Regional Health Center in Springfield. Clarke completed his medical education, including internship and residency, at Mayo Clinic. He is a magna cum laude graduate of Brigham Young University, and he is board-certified in anesthesiology. Dr. Shachar Tauber, an ophthalmologist with St. John’s Clinic-Eye Specialists in Springfield, has received approval to investigate a new, disposable, rapid pathogen-screening test to detect pink eye. Once approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, this method will be able to detect in 10 minutes the presence of the virus that causes pink eye. The study is ongoing at select institutions in the United States. Dr. Robert Swords, an infectious disease physician with St. John’s Clinic, is the principal investigator for a head-to-head safety and effectiveness study comparing Zyvox to Vancomycin in the treatment of pneumonia in adult hospitalized patients. The study is being conducted in about 120 hospitals worldwide. Bernie Dana, assistant professor of business at Evangel University, wrote “Developing a Quality Management System: The Foundation for Performance Excellence in Long Term Care,” a book published by the American Health Care Association and released for sale in January. The book is designed to guide skilled-nursing and assisted-living facilities in the development of six key components of a quality management system in order to achieve sustained levels of quality performance. Dana presented two seminars March 7 in Santa Fe for the New Mexico Health Care Association. In April, he and Doug Olson of the University of Wisconsin-Eau-Claire will present research titled “Quality Leadership for Today and Tomorrow” at the American College of Health Care Administrators. Dana will be the keynote speaker at the Quality Management System seminar May 12 for the Oregon Health Care Association. Greene County Medical Society in January installed officers for 2005. Dr. William R. Reynolds is president. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has practiced medicine in the Springfield area for 10 years. He also has practiced dentistry in Springfield for four years. He earned both his medical degree and his dentistry degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Reynolds joined the Greene County Medical Society in 1995. She has been a family nurse practitioner for five years and a registered nurse for 18 years. She earned her nursing diploma from Burge School of Nursing and her Bachelor of Science in nursing from Maryville University in St. Louis. She earned her Master of Science in nursing and family nurse practitioner degree at the University of Missouri-St Louis. She is pursuing a doctorate in nursing at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
