Education
Dennis Kear, Missouri State University professor and director of the Institute for School Improvement, received a $104,233 grant from southwest Missouri school districts for the Ozarks Educational Research Initiative. The funds will support increasing technology literacy and advancing achievement among K–12 students.
 
Fitness
Shauna Smith, a Pilates instructor and owner of The Bodysmith studio, received certification as a master instructor for the Core Barre exercise program through Charlotte, N.C.-based Absolute Pilates. Also, The Bodysmith was designated as a Core Barre licensed training center.

Health Care
Dr. John Waites of CoxHealth completed a yearlong fellowship in vascular medicine with the Cleveland Clinic. Waites specializes in treating artery, vein and lymphatic diseases.

CoxHealth chaplain Larry Cooper was named an associate member of the Association of Professional Flight Chaplains, an interfaith pastoral care organization that supports flight medicine crews and staff.

Mercy announced four staff changes. Chris Bos, a Mercy employee since 2002 in roles such as benefits manager and human resources manager, was promoted to director of human resources. A former pediatric nurse and nursing director, Beth Melgren was named Mercy experience coordinator for Mercy Hospital Springfield. Dr. Pamela Denson, who is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, joined Mercy Clinic OB/GYN-Smith Glynn Callaway. Dr. Kendra Morrison, a graduate of Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences who completed her emergency medicine residency at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren, Ohio, joined Mercy Clinic Emergency Medicine-Springfield.

Law
Carnahan, Evans, Cantwell & Brown PC attorneys John Carnahan III, William Evans, Clifford Brown, Joseph “Chip” Sheppard III, Thomas Peebles Jr. and John Price were named as Missouri-Kansas Super Lawyers in 2012. Also, Richard Maltby was on the Missouri-Kansas Rising Stars list.

Nonprofit
Hiland Dairy donated $27,500 to the Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks from its June 1–Sept. 30 fundraising campaign. Hiland dedicated a portion of sales of YoPhoria Probiotic smoothies, shredded cheese and 4-quart pails of ice cream.

Convoy of Hope hired Jaimie Trussell as director of major donor relations. Trussell worked previously for six years at MSU as director of development for the College of Natural and Applied Sciences.

Real Estate
Carol Jones Realtors named Shelley Forell sales manager and broker for the firm’s Springfield area offices. Forell brings to the position more than 16 years of experience in commercial and residential land development, real estate consulting, sales and property management.

Sports
Lake Country Soccer named Bill Garoutte as CEO. Garoutte previously served the organization as its board president.
