Pellham Phillips Architects and Engineers added two staff members. Kyle Hampton, who has an associate’s degree in drafting and design from Ozarks Technical Community College, is an architectural draftsman. Cathleen Frank joined the firm as an interior designer and project manager. She has a bachelor’s degree in interior design from University of Central Missouri and a master’s degree in project management from the Keller Graduate School of Management. She is also president of the Missouri West/Kansas chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers.

Butler, Rosenbury & Partners received four silver awards at the 29th annual Addy Awards, presented by Springfield Ad Club. Graphic designer Keith Belt and contributor/copy editor Sarah Campbell received awards for the DREAM Initiative direct mailing campaign, a special invitation to Hog Heaven, the Bike Town Springfield announcement for Ozark Greenways and a Retail FUNdamentals Workshop logo.

Community

Ozarks Antique Auto Club made a $20,600 grant to the OTC Foundation, the fundraising arm of Ozarks Technical Community College. The gift will be used to provide scholarships for students in the automotive technology programs.

Chris Houghton rejoined Habitat for Humanity of Springfield as acquisitions manager. He previously worked for the organization as construction manager and later as manager of the Habitat ReStore. Houghton has 17 years of experience in the construction field and is responsible for developing new ideas to secure materials and assistance for Habitat projects.

Springfield-Greene County Library District received a $15,000 Missouri State Library Summer Reading Grant. The money will fund a 10-week program designed to provide young children of working parents with an opportunity to participate in the library’s Summer Reading Program by bringing the program to child-care sites.

Ozarks Regional YMCA announced its new corporate board members for 2008: John Himmel, chairman of Commerce Bank; Russ Marquart, president and CEO of Empire Bank; Mark P. Sharp, a partner with BKD LLP and director of consulting services for BKD’s Southern Missouri practice unit; Tim Weidknecht, vice president of Springfield Trust and Investment Co.; and Bob Moreland, community president and market manager for Commerce Bank in Bolivar.

Chuck Bailey joined Springfield Workshop as general manager. Bailey, who most recently served as co-founder and general manager of The C.L. Bailey Co., replaces Ray McMenamy, who retired after 10 years. C.L. Bailey Co. is based in Marionville and manufactures and distributes pool tables, game-room furniture and billiards accessories.

Education

Cox College of Nursing and Health Sciences named William J. Agnew and Russell G. Rhodes to its board of trustees. Agnew is an associate professor of education in the counseling, leadership and special education department at Missouri State University. He earned his master’s degree from University of Nebraska at Omaha and his doctorate in education administration from Saint Louis University. Rhodes is a retired MSU professor with a master’s degree and doctorate in botany from the University of Tennessee.

Paul Durham, Missouri State University associate professor of biology, received a $60,500 award for his project, DHE Regulation of Neuron-Glia Signaling in Trigeminal Ganglia: A Novel of Mechanism of Action. Durham’s work will focus on understanding how the drug dihydroergotamine, or DHE, helps alleviate the symptoms of common migraine headache.

Arlen Diamond, MSU director of broadcast services, received an $8,900 award for the Missouri Parent Information Resource Center. The center works to help parents understand how to engage in their child’s education. With the award, MSU will provide a series of call-in programs on Ozarks Public Television that will allow parents to ask questions to experts on the No Child Left Behind Act and education system.

Representatives of OTC’s Student Government Association attended the National Student Advocacy and Leadership Conference in Washington, D,C. OTC students George Minor, Teresa Foster and Levi Smith partnered with other Missouri community college students to lobby senators and representatives on behalf of community colleges.

Evangel University sophomore Amy Bess received a $2,850 scholarship from the UPS Foundation. Bess, of Oregon, Ohio, is a marketing and management major.

Bryan Sanders, professor of legal studies and government at Evangel University, spoke at the 2008 Christian Pre-Law Conference at Regent University School of Law in Virginia Beach, Va. Sanders made a presentation on the school’s academic mission and judged the American Bar Association’s Representation in Mediation student competition.

Karen Hood, director of financial aid at Cox College of Nursing and Health Sciences, was a scheduled presenter at the Missouri Association of Student Financial Aid Personnel Spring Conference 2008. She represented the private school industry in a panel discussion and presentation regarding campus-based aid. Hood joined Cox College in 2005 and oversees federal financial aid.

Government

Gov. Matt Blunt appointed several area residents to state boards and commissions.

Lisa A. Cardone, an environmental and safety coordinator for Kraft Foods Inc. and MSU graduate, joined the Missouri Emergency Response Commission.

Larry Maddox, title officer for Tri-Lakes Metro Title Co. and founder of New Growth Ministries, joined the Missouri Juvenile Justice Advisory Group. He completed his business management training at Edmonson Junior College and through the U.S. Army.

Patrick Chambers, director of services for independent living with On My Own Inc., was named to the Independent Living Council.

Emily Pohlsander, a stay-at-home mother who previously worked for two newspapers and as an administrative assistant for a bank in North Carolina, joined the State Interagency Coordinating Council.

Ron Boyer, chief operating officer of Surefire Strategies LLC, was appointed to the Air Conservation Commission.

Health Care

The National Association of Home Care and Hospice elected Oxford Healthcare President Karen Thomas as a representative to the 2008 nominating committee. NAHC is the nation’s largest trade association for home care agencies, hospices, home-care aide organizations and medical equipment suppliers. The committee reviews names submitted for NAHC board positions.

Insurance

Doug Robertson and Paul Spuhl, Springfield agents for Farmers Insurance Group, completed the Career Agents Course at the University of Farmers in Agoura Hills, Calif. The five-day course is targeted to enhance the professional skills of Farmers’ agents.

Danny A. O’Neal, vice president of Southern Missouri Bank of Marshfield, qualified for the Court of the Table of the Million Dollar Round Table. Insurance professionals with Achieving Court of the Table status are selected for their knowledge, client service and ethical conduct.

Ron Fox, a field agent for Knights of Columbus, completed study to qualify for the Fraternal Insurance Counselor Fellow designation. Fox, who has a finance and economics degree from Rockhurst University, serves Knights of Columbus members in the Springfield and Joplin areas by providing life insurance and related products.

Southwest Missouri Insurance Group earned the Elite Signature Partner designation from Missouri Employers Mutual. The designation, which is the highest tier based on program criteria, can be achieved annually.

Law

Deanna Scott, director of litigation for Legal Services of Southern Missouri, was elected to The Missouri Bar Board of Governors.

She represents the 44 counties comprising the Missouri Southern Court of Appeals District. Scott fills one of three seats added for members with unique experience or knowledge, or diverse characteristics.
