Boys & Girls Town of Missouri received an $11,000 grant from the Darr Family Foundation for updates to the organization's Darr Cottage. The grant will allow Boys & Girls Town to update bathrooms and purchase housewares for the facility.

Discovery Center of Springfield received $199,830 in tax credits from the Missouri Department of Economic Development's Neighborhood Assistance Program. Discovery Center will use the credits to fund its hands-on, eight-week science program, ScienceWorks on the Road.

Phyllis Lovett, of Springfield, was appointed to the State Rehabilitation Advisory Council for the Blind. Lovett, president of the Missouri Council of the Blind, will serve through 2011.

Family Violence Center added three members to its board of directors: Ron Weiss, Pat Williams and Renetta Thomson.

Education

Missouri State University's College of Business Administration added two professors to its faculty. Michael Groomer was appointed to the Robert and Charlotte Bitter Distinguished Chair in Business, in the school of accountancy, and Les Heitger was appointed to the BKD Distinguished Chair in Forensic Accounting. Both come from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.

Ozarks Technical Community College named the winners of its annual Excellence in Education awards, given to faculty and staff members chosen by peers. The full-time instructor winner was biology teacher John Fishback; Sharmane Arnold in the computer information technology department received the award for adjunct instructors; Online Teaching Director Witt Salley received the administrative/professional support staff honors; the clerical/technical support staff award went to Marcia Wheeler, administrative assistant in public relations and grant development; and the institutional support/custodial staff award went to groundskeeper Jason Bound.

MSU added two admission counselors: Nina Walzer, an MSU graduate, recruits in the Kansas City area, and Jackie Crenshaw, a graduate of William Jewell College, covers the St. Louis metropolitan area.

MSU received a $77,409 grant from the Department of Homeland Security's Fire Prevention & Safety program. The grant will be used to equip stoves in 142 university campus apartments with safety elements designed to prevent cooking fires.

Finance

BancorpSouth added vice president/commercial lenders Brad Weaver and Brent Baldwin. Weaver brings 28 years of banking experience, most recently as president and CEO of Mid-Missouri Bank, to BancorpSouth's East Battlefield branch. Baldwin brings 15 years of banking experience, most recently as senior vice president at UMB Bank, to BancorpSouth's South Fremont branch.

Health Care

Drs. Bernie Parrish and Erek Van Riessen and nurse practitioner Lorri Julian-Trotter joined CoxHealth Center Republic, formerly Republic Family Health Care.

Jordan Valley Community Health Center added Derek Smith, Nick Pfannenstiel and Rendi Pfannenstiel to its general dentistry staff. All are May 2008 graduates of University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry.

St. John's physician Dr. Daniel Pinheiro presented at the seventh International Head & Neck Cancer Meeting about the use of cyberknife radiosurgery to treat head, neck and skull base malignancy.

Lake Regional Health System's Cardiopulmonary Program received certification from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Certification assures that the program meets standards of care specified by federal cardiac rehab guidelines. Recertification is required every three years.[[In-content Ad]]
