Community

Ozarks Regional YMCA received a $5,532 grant from the Missouri Arts Council for the 2009 Our Town project at the Pat Jones YMCA branch. Our Town is an after-school project that reaches out to low-income and at-risk students at Reed Middle School.

Construction

Larry Snyder and Co. added Josh Stringer as a project engineer and promoted Jennifer Baker to project manager. Stringer graduated from Missouri State University with a degree in industrial management. Baker has been with the company since 2002.

Education

Drury University promoted Ed Derr to director of counseling, disability services and testing. Derr is a licensed professional counselor with 15 years of college counseling center experience - the last five years as Drury's director of counseling.

Drury named Lawrence Anderson coordinator of diversity support services. Anderson, who earned a bachelor's degree from MSU in 1993 and a master's degree in education from Drury in 1999, helps domestic minority students adjust to campus life and conduct diversity training. He also works with Edward Jones Minority Scholars.

MSU's Ozarks Environmental and Water Resources Institute received an $81,096 grant from the city of Springfield to provide technical support, implement water quality monitoring and analysis activities, and implement soil-testing activities for the Biosolids Runoff project. OEWRI is conducting a three-year study to compare the runoff loss of nutrients and metals from fields treated with biosolids to fields treated with traditional fertilizer.

Paul Durham, director of MSU's Center for Biomedical and Life Sciences, received a $75,000 grant from Merck & Co. for the project CGRP Receptor Antagonists: Investigation of Mechanism of Action. The project's goal is to test the efficacy of a new anti-migraine drug that blocks the function of the protein CGRP.

Stephanie Hein, MSU instructor of hospitality and restaurant administration, received a $25,000 Darden Foundation grant to purchase restaurant technology training equipment for hospitality and restaurant students. The grant allows the department to install new computer technology in the department's dining room and kitchen learning facilities.

Engineering

Ty Alexander, Springfield office manager for Terracon Consultants Inc., was promoted to senior associate. Alexander, who has been with Terracon for more than 12 years, oversees office operations along with geotechnical engineering and construction materials engineering consulting and project management.

Jonathan Robison, managing associate of GeoEngineers' Springfield office, presented a paper during the American Society of Civil Engineers' Karst Conference in Tallahassee, Fla. The paper, "Geophysical Investigation of the Delaware Avenue Sinkhole, Nixa, Missouri," discussed Robison's efforts along with Missouri University of Science and Technology professor Neil L. Anderson to assess the integrity of homes and properties after the catastrophic sinkhole collapse in Nixa in August 2006.

Finance

Amy D. Frizzell joined BKD Wealth Advisors as supervising adviser. Frizzell has more than eight years of experience in wealth management, including work coordinating investments, retirement and benefit planning. She also has assisted with insurance, tax and estate planning for high net-worth families and business owners and is a licensed investment adviser representative.

Government

Ted Hillmer, superintendent of Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, was appointed to the Missouri Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. Hillmer has been with the National Park Service for 31 years and has worked at the battlefield since August 2003.

Hospitality

Branson's Chateau on the Lake Resort, Spa & Convention Center received two industry awards: Meetings & Conventions magazine's Gold Key Award for 2008 and Association Meetings magazine's Inner Circle Award for 2008. The Gold Key Award is presented to meeting properties nominated and selected by Meetings & Conventions magazine readers based on overall professionalism and quality. The Inner Circle Award is presented to 40 hotels and resorts annually for high levels of service, flexible function space, quality of food and beverage, and good value on room rates.

Insurance

John H. George joined Insurors of the Ozarks in Springfield. George earned his bachelor's degree from Drury University and sells both personal and commercial property and casualty insurance. He has 25 years of experience as a licensed insurance agent.

Casey Chastain of Sentry Insurance was named to the company's Second Quarter Leaderboard, which recognizes the top four account executives nationwide for commercial insurance and retirement plan production.

Real Estate

Steven Jackson, president of Realty Mortgage and Appraisals Inc., attended a seminar titled "An Introduction to Valuing Green Buildings" in Chicago. The continuing education seminar, sponsored by the Appraisal Institute, trained participants to identify components of sustainable properties, evaluate construction costs for long-term benefits, identify the costs and benefits of green construction, and provide reliable estimates in the context of available data.

Workplace Safety

Summit Safety Group owner Mike Downie received the Bronze CSP award from the national Board of Certified Safety Professionals. Downie, who has held CSP certification for 10 years, passed examinations in safety, health, environmental management, engineering, information management and communications, and professional conduct and ethics.[[In-content Ad]]
