Lisa Drew-Alton, manager of Sapp Design Associates Architects' sustainable design studio, attended the Greenbuild 2008 conference in Boston. Alton heard seminars on developing consensus-based green design and construction strategies for publicly funded institutions.

Community

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board received top honors in 2008 for conducting three of the highest-rated Amateur Softball Association national championships. The tournaments were two girls' fast-pitch northern national championships and a men's fast-pitch national championship.

Developmental Center of the Ozarks received a $5,000 grant from Bank of America to support First Steps Therapy in Stone and Taney counties.

Education

Missouri State University hired St. Charles native Jackie Crenshaw and Kansas City native Nina Walzer to recruit students from the St. Louis and Kansas City areas, where more than 30 percent of the university's undergraduate students are from. Crenshaw and Walzer represent MSU at college fairs and high schools and develop relationships with counselors, prospective students and parents.

The Missouri Colleges Fund awarded three scholarships to Evangel University seniors for the 2008-09 school year. Elementary and middle school education major Kristina Mooney received a $1,875 Monsanto Fund Outstanding Science or Mathematics Teacher Scholarship. Mathematics education major Angelina Rosolino received a $1,000 MasterCard scholarship. Mathematics education major Jaclyn "Jaci" Rothermich received a $3,125 Citigroup Teacher Excellence scholarship.

MSU's World Affairs Council received the overall outstanding delegation award at the American Model United Nations International Conference in Chicago. The award goes to the team that clearly embodies the spirit of the UN and the individual nation they represent, and is chosen by vote of all participating delegations. MSU represented Palestine at the conference.

Paul Durham, director of MSU's Center for Biomedical and Life Sciences, received a $1.7 million grant from the U.S. Army, via St. Louis-based Crosslink Inc., for the Self-Decontaminating Polymer System for Chemical and Biological Warfare Agents project. The goal is to develop a self-detoxifying, self-renewing reactive material coating system for textiles, which would destroy chemical and biological agents and prevent contamination.

Alicia Mathis, head of the MSU biology department, received a $79,690 grant from the National Park Service for the Fire Effects Monitoring in Central Great Plains NPS Units project, which uses prescribed fire to manage conservation areas.

Jennifer Cox, MSU assistant director of facilities and operation for residence life, received a $77,409 grant from the Department of Homeland Security for fire prevention and safety projects. The grant will fund installation of Safe-T-Elements in campus stoves; the elements are solid, electronically controlled cover plates for stovetop burners.

MSU biology professor Chris Barnhart received a $33,000 award from Missouri Department of Conservation for the Propagation of Endangered Native Mussels for Research and Recovery project.

Government

John T. Gentry, 51, of Springfield, was appointed to a three-year term to Missouri's Appellate Judicial Commission. Gentry is president of Positronic Industries and holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology.
